The adventures of a fourth grade teacher in East Central Illinois.

Valentine’s Day

In October, we had the class Halloween party. In December, it was just a “holiday” party. Today was the last of the three regularly-planned classroom parties: Valentine’s Day.

Some of the students had complained back in December because the treats for the party were “too healthy.” This complaint was passed on to parents, who took it to heart. The back table in our classroom was laden with cookies, cupcakes, brownies, cupcakes, apple slices, cupcakes, gogurt, and cupcakes. Beverages included apple juice, Capri Sun, Capri Sun, and more Capri Sun.

In other words, my fourth graders celebrated Valentine’s Day with sugar, sugar, and more sugar.

Of course, there was also the traditional sharing of Valentine’s Day cards. Several students gave me a cards, some of which were hand-made. One student brought me a bag of candy and another gave me a ginormous box of Whitman’s chocolates.

It was a fun afternoon. I just hope that I don’t have a group of twenty-five fourth graders all suffering from sugar-crash tomorrow!
